Dr. Alex Dastgheib's Research

Dr. Alex Dastgheib has spent much of his career researching in the ophthalmic space. His prolific collaboration with colleagues around the world demonstrates his passion and dedication for helping patients with their eye problems.

By serving a patient population in an underserved part of Southern California, Dr. Dastgheib has had the opportunity to see severe cataract cases that had been left untreated for years, if not decades.

As a result of this extensive experience, Dr. Dastgheib has learned and practiced cutting edge techniques for cataract surgery. His most recent 2022 presentation, written and presented in conjunction with Duke University Eye Center, at the America Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, showcases a new classification of 5 subgroups of complex, blinding cataracts and best approaches for surgical treatments. Of the 325 consecutive blind eyes in the study, surgery in every case was successful with a mean post-op vision of 20/30 at six weeks. This is the first time in 40+ years that such results in safety by modern phacoemulsification cataract surgery have been reported in blinding cataracts worldwide. It’s estimated that 500 million phacoemulsification cataract surgeries have been performed worldwide.
